In cosplay, hair is the first thing people see from a distance. Your costume can be perfect in every detail, and the wrong wig can still lose the whole character. This guide takes you from choosing the right wig to wearing and securing it, and caring for it so it lasts for many more parties.

Choose a wig to match the character

How to wear a wig properly

  1. Flatten your natural hair: if it's long, make flat braids or small buns close to your head.
  2. Put on a wig cap so your hair stays in place and the surface is smooth.
  3. Hold the wig by the back edges, place it from front to back, then pull it down.
  4. Adjust the bangs and hairline at the temples, and secure it with bobby pins at the sides and back.
  5. Comb the ends with a wide-tooth comb. If the hair is very long, you can trim it a little to suit your face.

Care and storage

After wearing, gently detangle from the ends upwards. If it needs washing, use cold water and a mild shampoo without rubbing, then let it dry on a stand or bottle away from sun and heat. Avoid hair dryers and straighteners: most costume wigs are synthetic fibre that heat can damage. Store it in its bag or a hairnet to keep its shape for next time.

Quick questions

Are wigs suitable for kids? Yes. Choose wigs made for kids, as they're smaller and lighter.

My wig itches. What can I do? A wig cap underneath greatly reduces friction against the scalp.

Can I use the same wig for more than one character? Definitely, especially basic colours like black, brown and blonde. Change the styling or accessories and you have a new character.
